Great Resource to Teach Baby to Speak

I was very interested in reading this book in the hopes that I would learn something to help me get my twins to talk. The Talking Baby talks about ways to help your little one (and I mean little - they say to start early - before one) to talk sooner. One of the most frustrating periods for parents is that span of time when the child knows what they want, but can't communicate what it is. The parent is left guessing and trying to figure out what it is while their child is screaming at the top of their lungs. This book is here to help eliminate (or at least make shorter) that time period.
I did enjoy this book. There were lots of helpful hints and tricks to help your child start talking. Some of them were of course no brainers (repetition, repetition, repetition) but others were very helpful (word and phrases that are easiest for baby to say). Overall, I highly recommend this book to those with babies. It'll give you some fun and interesting ways to "play" with baby that will help to expand their vocabulary and hopefully, get them on the path to start talking early. I do not think this book is for those that have children over 1 or 1 1/2. By this time, the child is more older and set in their ways and may not be as open to some of the "tricks" and tips they spell out in the book. Don't get me wrong, you can still definitely use this book at any age. I think it's a great resource. I just think you'll get the MOST out of it, if you start using the tips before age 1.

Jump-Starting

Becoming a parent isn't easy and babies don't come with instruction manuals. From birth on, we are faced with a thousand questions about childcare and development.
Example: It sometimes becomes a great worry to parents when their baby seems to be slow at picking up the simple words we use everyday. Much of the time one doesn't know where to turn for advice.
Now we have a concise and intelligent book we can turn to for help when we need it. Jeremy and Karina Sweet have written a wonderful guide which gives techniques that encourage our babies to learn to speak sooner.

Talking about the Talking Baby

"The Talking Baby" is a fun and compact tool box on how to get your little one talking in no time. You may wonder why it is important to have your child talking asap. Well it is helpful if they can effectively communicate their needs. However, I really enjoy how the authors make the learning process interactive and fun. Many of the techniques that are used in teaching your child to talk are also key in helping your child learn other things as well,
Examples -
- The authors have techniques for teaching your child how to say the various colors - well it is also helps children "learn" the colors.
- Same thing with the alphabet - it is one thing to be able to "speak" the alphabet, but by doing so they are learning their letters.
- Ditto for food and animals.
- With a little imagination these techniques can be applied to math, science, reading, and more!
One thing that I would recommend for the 2nd edition is that they add footnotes on their reseach. The authors do have a general list of sources at the end but it would be nice to see sources directly sited.
The general theme is that working with your child can be and should be fun. While "The Talking Baby" focuses on techniques to be used for talking, this attitude can be used to help your child learn just about anything - the key is parent focusing on giving your child attention and focusing on goals. "Talking Baby" is a nice compliment to NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children while "NutureShock" is much more theoretical while "The Talking Baby" is a hands on manual.
Final verdict - While relatively short "The Talking Baby" is definitely worthy of your reading time and money!
