One does not equal all...

"Middle Ages...a vibrant age of transition." Not sure I would agree whole-heartedly with the book blurb. As a woman living in the Middle Ages, it all would boil down to location, time, and location again. Some women had more freedoms than others. A widow had higher status than a married woman; yet, widows many times were chained to the lives of their deceased husbands, and to remarry brought new hardships of their own. I'm not convinced that all women in the Middle Ages were as self-sufficient and take-charge as the examples given us. We are asked to look at a few stories of successful women and extrapolate that all women were successful. However, I did enjoy reading about those women who were able --in spite of living when they did -- to make a name for themselves.

Decent read, but a lot of general information that is dry and boring in the beginning. (Yes, I am a history person.)

The biographical chapters were much better, and I think they did a better job of presenting not only info about the specific people, but about others of their group as well.

I got it as a Kindle deal for ninety-nine cents - don't think I would pay the 13.99 for the Kindle edition. There are better works.

Good basic material

This collection of short biographies shows that women's lives in the Middle Ages was not as drab and uninteresting as many people think. Women did lead very full lives, depending on their position in society. This is more of a "popular" history work, not a scholarly work (there are some inaccuracies, particularly the list of medieval inventions, which, for example, includes the horsecollar, which was invented in China, not Europe). However, for the reader interested in history in general, this is a worthwhile introduction.

"Arthur Edward Waite (October 2, 1857 - May 19, 1942) was a scholarly mystic who wrote extensively on occult and esoteric matters, and was the co-creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. As his biographer, R.A. Gilbert described him, "Waite's name has survived because he was the first to attempt a systematic study of the history of western occultism - viewed as a spiritual tradition rather than as aspects of proto-science or as the pathology of religion." Born in the United States, and raised in England, A.E. Waite joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1891, became a Freemason in 1901, and entered the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia in 1902. The Golden Dawn was torn by further internal feuding until Waite's departure in 1914; a year later he formed the Fellowship of the Rosy Cross, not to be confused with the Societas Rosicruciana. A hard to read, obscure, and confusing little book.

I've bought this book with expectations of getting loads of information in it, and was somewhat disappointed by it.
The book suffers from several problems :
- The book is a hard reading - Waite's style is obfuscated, which makes the non-trivial material harder to understand.
- Waite doesnt tell the whole truth, and not even half of it, not to mention the inclusion of misinformation. Examples include unexplained symbols (symbols on charioteer's belt, the fool's clothings, and many others), desciption of the emptress being 'virgo intacta', etc.
- Some of the cards' descriptions contradict, or at least appear to contradict, the pictures on the cards.
- Waite borrows a lot from earlier writers, but then goes on to pass criticism on his sources and belittles them.
So the book has to be read very carefuly, criticaly, and with a lot of patience. And those who do so *will* gain - the book is better than many of the instant tarot reading guides, giving truer and deeper information from the horse's mouth.
I suggest people to read this book, but *not* as the first book on the deck, and preferably along with other material (e.g. books about the golden dawn, tarot history, or symbolism).

Historically Important, but not a Book for Beginners

This is perhaps one of the most historically important texts on the Rider-Waite-Coleman Tarot deck ever written - because it was written by the man who designed the cards. However, as with many "historical" documents, it is problematic. Some historical context is needed to appreciate this book. Waite was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a "secret" society dedicated to the preservation of occult knowledge. It held the belief that only people who had been members and studied for many years would be "elevated" enough to be able to receive the most inner teachings, among those teachings, the "full" meaning of the Tarot cards. When this book was written in 1911, "public" knowledge of the Tarot had just started to grow, and there were many "charlatans" who were using the cards for dubious reasons. To a large extent, this book was written to denounce all of the "spurious" meanings that had become associated with the cards. Unfortunately, because so much of the "real" meanings were limited to those who had advanced in the Order, Waite is not very open in sharing those meanings with "outsiders". The result is that you get a lot of what the cards AREN'T, but not very much of what the cards ARE.

What you do get is a fairly detailed history of the cards and background on early interpreters of the cards. He provides enough "Divinatory Meanings" and a couple of spreads that you COULD use this book to learn the cards and (sort of) how to use them, but this book is really of more interest to the "serious" student of the Tarot who is looking for historic insights and history.

Another "difficulty" in this book is the language itself. It is a combination of Edwardian English, "scholarly" style, and occult terminology that can make it somewhat daunting to read. To this end, the books by Eden Gray preserve much of Waite's thoughts and interpretations but are written in a much more approachable literary style.

Essential obfuscation!

This book is essential to figuring out the RWS and clones Tarot decks, Waite's personal insights bring forth things in the cards that no one else can, even though others have perhaps tried harder to make things clear. Many Tarot student feel that Waite leaves out more than he actually discusses, like his Golden Dawn symbolism should be kept secret or something...yet what "little" he does give us is invaluable. If only one could time travel, tape him to his chair and make him write more!
(Note: The "Original Rider-Waite" set comes with a version of this book, but this is the one with the original uncolored prints by Pamela Colman Smith, the one that comes in the set doesn't have the pictures and it's tiny, this edition I think is much superior.)

A Great Follow Up

Greg Boyd completes many of the thoughts engaged in The Myth of a Christian Nation. While you again get Boyd's intelligent and thoughtful approach to scripture, this time his pastor's heart seems to engage much more. The books is a solid re-enforcement to the first work but takes more practical steps to speak into a number of American cultural issues. The first section of the book ties together this work with the previous and one and defines Boyd's position in how we are to approach others and entities as believers of Jesus. Boyd in his useful terms gives us again the picture of power over (manipulation, strength, control) and power under (love, surrender, service) and how operating from this position puts us often in direct conflict with the way that the world works. We are called to manifest the beauty of God by sacrificially loving and serving those around us. He writes that there is no way to do this without "revolting against everything in our lives that keeps us self-centered, greedy, and apathetic toward the plight of others." The American church shares and even celebrates much of what it seems early followers of the way stood against. The kingdom of God must display the sacrificial character of Jesus. Boyd says, "To the extent that any individual, church, or movement looks like that, it manifests the Kingdom of God. To the extent that it doesn't look like that, it doesn't. It's that simple." The book then discusses twelve areas where Boyd believes that followers of Jesus must revolt against the powers. The twelve focus areas are idolatry, judgment, religion, individualism, nationalism, violence, social oppression, racism, poverty/greed, abuse of creation, abuse of sex, and secularism. In each section Boyd takes his ideas of sacrificial calvary type love and shows what this means for how we interact with others. The book makes you think and dig. Whether you agree with Boyd or not, the book will lead to some great discussion and stretching.

A revelation ...

This book is certainly one of the most enlightening and freeing Christian books I've ever read -- and I've read plenty in my 30 plus years as a Christian. Other reviewers have rightly talked about the message and the impact this book has had on people and their understanding of how the Kingdom of God is really supposed to operate, so I don't need to add anything more on those lines.

I do want to add a very curious reaction I had after reading the first four or five chapters of this book, something very surprising. I've been reading the Bible now for decades and, particularly in the Gospels, I've always run across these sayings or actions of Jesus that just didn't seem to sit well with what I've been taught about the nature of Christianity. For instance, the whole Sermon on the Mount -- is one to read that as absolute instruction "when your enemy strikes you, turn to him the other cheek", or is that just metaphor for some kind of deeper understanding? And really, what's the point of turning the other cheek? How does having bruised cheeks benefit the kingdom? And what about phrases like "the world will know you're my disciples by the love you have for one another"? And what about Jesus washing of the disciples' feet? Frankly, these events and sayings of Christ never seemed to sit well in the jigsaw puzzle that is my Christian understanding. Teachings about the Sermon on the Mount always seemed to be reaching for something that wasn't really there.

But after reading about half the Boyd book, suddenly the jigsaw puzzle rearranged itself and all these confusing sayings and historical activities suddenly fell neatly into place. Turning the other cheek is an extension of the power of the cross. It's all about the cross, self sacrifice, loving your enemy, denying self, humble service, etc. That is the power of the cross and that's the power that will save people. Squabbling about abortion, legalizing morality, judging, condemning, Gay bashing, etc. -- these things have been completely ineffective, if not detrimental, to the advancement of the Kingdom, because they reflect the power of man and the flesh, not the power of the cross. The cross wasn't just for Jesus and his disciples; it's a way of life for all of us if we're serious about our Christianity.

The Myth of a Christian Religion is Gregory Boyd's follow up to The Myth of a Christian Nation. The book takes Boyd's opinions and views of a Christian nation even further, stating that Jesus did not come to start a new religion, but to bring the kingdom of God to earth.

Boyd basically expounds on many of the themes he covered in Myth of a Christian Nation, but focuses less on America and more on the individual spiritual condition. His passion and caring exude from the chapters, and we see more of Gregory Boyd than in previous works.

Boyd calls on readers to revolt against a variety of things: idolatry, judgement, religion, individualism, nationalism, violence, social oppression, racism, poverty, greed, abuse of sex and creation, and secularism. Boyd is quick to use the example of Jesus in response to any opposition to his views, showing that Christians are called to follow this example.

This is a great book to add to your collection. It is less eye opening than Myth of a Christian Nation, but is a deeper and more personal work.

Atlantis Unmasked by Alyssa Day

Three and half stars for "Atlantis Unmasked" by Alyssa Day. If every series has a 'stumble', then for me this book is it. I didn't 'feel' the connection between the main characters and the writing felt choppy instead of the smooth flow I'm used to from this author. I didn't hate it by any means, but I was expecting much more.

Grace is a leader of the human rebellion against the vampires and their allies and has been ever since her brother was killed by a pack of vamps celebrating their 'coming out'. She uses the gift of perfect aim she received from the goddess Diana's blood passed through her family. She's closed herself off from everything but vengence and just wants to take out as many vamps as she can before she dies fighting. The warrior Alexios disturbs her. He's the only man who shakes her composure and makes her 'feel'. But he's an Alpha male all the way and Grace won't stand for anyone trying to protect her and her goddess may not either!

Alexios is scarred, physically and mentally. Tortured as a plaything by the goddess Anubis, her minions scarred his face with hellfire. He's drawn so powerfully to Grace, but fears opening himself up to the pain of love and loss. Now the Fae have appeared on the scene and that's never, ever, ever a good thing. Alexios has been tasked to work with Grace and steal the Vampire's Bane from the possession of the most powerful vampire yet.

I can't even write a smooth review for this one. It feels disjointed. I'll just blame it on the appearance of the Fae. Will that work? I'm guessing Day is expanding the scope of the plotline as there seemed to be a bit of 'empire building' present to include new characters, new allies, and possibly new enemies. I'm hoping that's the case and in any event, every series has a 'lag book' and this one's it for me so far.

Alexios is still yummy, but Grace never quite felt right to me. Toward the end, she changed quite a bit which made her better for Alexios but struck me as a kind of cheat. Ah well, maybe it's just me. I still intend to keep reading this series and the next book is "Atlantis Redeemed" sked to release in Feb 2010.

The Hunter and the Warrior...

Alexios was once a gorgeous, golden hunk along with his fellow warriors. That is, until the evil goddess Anubisa captured him (she really likes messing with Atlanteans). She and her blood pride mutilated him and burned him with their hellfire scarring not only his body, but also his soul. Even after his escape, he remains aloof and hides his scar under his hair.

Grace is a leader of one of the rebel factions that fight alongside Quinn's Resistance fighters. Grace has been fighting since her brother's murder at the hands of vampires several years ago. She herself is an elite warrior because she is a direct female descendent of Diana (the Goddess of the Hunt). Her aim is never off and much prefers her bow and a quiver of arrows as her weapon of choice and she can definitely hold her own alongside the scarred warrior that she is attracted to.

Alexios and Grace are thrown together to retrieve The Vampire's Bane, a yellow diamond with the power to destroy vamps from Poseidon's Trident that has the ability to control minds. Throw in some meddling from Fae royalty (always trouble with a capital T), goddess intervention, and an Atlantean warrior learning to trust and love again and you have a fantastic read. Definitely recommend reading these in order, that way sub characters, and storylines make a little more sense!

First of all, this is by far my favorite cover art of all the published books so far. On the plus side, the author did change things up a little in that the naughty bits were not the same repetitive descriptions that they were in the previous three/five books. But on the down side, the para-normals are getting way too numerous to keep track off. There's the vampires, werewolves, witches, other shape shifters (panther, tiger, bear, raptor), empaths, gem singers, object readers, descendants of Diana (Goddess of the Hunt)....and I feel like I'm forgetting a couple (truth tellers, elves). Seriously, who can keep track with the way the series is spinning out of control? Less War Against Humanity, more search for the lost gems of Poseidon's Trident please and life on Atlantis! That's the only reason I'll keep reading the books.
