Malone again - hurrah!

It's a short story from the Malone series, but anything by Craig Rice is fun to read and re-read.

The circus is coming to town

Lawyer John J. Malone's regular clients are so off-beat that the circus folks don't seem that odd by comparison. And like Perry Mason, he can never resist a good mystery. In this case, it's The Mystery of the Endangered Lions. Not "endangered" in the modern sense. It's the 1950's and no one thinks it's cruel to keep large animals in small cages. And side-shows that allow paying customers to gawk at the bearded lady or the fat lady or the tattooed lady are socially acceptable. Today, of course, all the world's a circus and no amount of obesity or tattoos raises an eyebrow, although a lady with a good, thick beard will probably get a second look.

But to get back to those lions.... Someone's killing them off (or trying to) and it looks like an inside job. The circus performers live in unhealthy closeness as they travel the country and passions flare and blood feuds are common. Malone has to try to find the villain by getting information from a people who are insular and distrustful my nature and training. It's not an easy job and then there's the danger of ending up as supper. After all, the lions don't know he's there to protect them.

This is a long story or novella, but it's well worth the 99 cents. Rice was a fine, reckless writer who never followed the script. Her stories are uniquely her own. If you love classic American mysteries, you should check her out.

Craig Rice's enjoyable short story

I like Craig Rice and her John J Malone character, and this short story was new to me, so I enjoyed the story and the twist at the end. Someone unfamiliar with her might not enjoy it as much, and you have to be aware it was written 60+ years ago, so there is no forensics or procedures we're used to now, with the TV influence.

Instantly gripping, yet in the end it doesn't fully live up...

Not many novels have been able to grip me from the very first sentence like `Body of Lies'. From that first word almost I felt as though I was being compelled to turn each page and finish each chapter. The opening sequence is mapped out so beautifully, with enough detail to satisfy our curiosity yet enough mystery to keep us interested, and I am happy to say that for the most part Ignatius keeps up that pace and delivers an enjoyable, albeit forgettable, ride.

I think that is the major problem with `Body of Lies'. It is enjoyable, but when all is said and done, that's about all that can be said; it was merely enjoyable.

`Body of Lies' tells the story of CIA agent Roger Ferris, who comes equipped with Bondesque credentials and a wounded marriage. Ferris was injured in Iraq and since has been trying to capture terrorist Suleiman. His attempts are continuingly failing and placing him and the ones he loves in even more danger. That's when Ferris and his boss Ed Hoffman concoct a plan that has enough edge to really do the trick. They create a façade, a faux agent who has supposedly penetrated Suleiman's network and is supplying the CIA with information. Ferris and Hoffman both know that the threat of betrayal will undoubtedly cause Suleiman to surface, and when he does they can pounce.

There are many obstacles that Ferris must face in order to fulfill his job. He has to contend with the threats from his wife Gretchen that are a result of his asking for a divorce; threats that threaten his job and his freedom. He has to deal with the imposing opinions of Hani Salaam from Jordanian Intelligence.

And then there is Alice, Ferris' one true love and the major chink in this otherwise enjoyable chain. The problem I have with Alice is that her inclusion in the novel creates a thick layer of clichéd familiarity that I really didn't want to have to read. The ending is completely ruined because of her existence. I know that it is supposed to add some depth to Ferris and his actions, but his final actions are less than satisfying. If Ignatius had left this novel an action/thriller and not a romance novel it would have gone down a little easier, because when Ignatius leaves Alice out of the picture the novel maintains an admirable pace.

Sure, the novel is not perfect, and there are areas that could have been cleaned up, but for the most part it is entertaining and enjoyable. I was not really a fan of Ferris' character (a lot of that due to his `puppy-dog' lovelorn relationship with Alice) and actually found Hani the most interesting character in the book. His character was mysteriously intriguing and really stays with the reader long after the novel is finished.

Sadly though, not much else sticks. The novel is a fun ride, but once the ride is over there really isn't anything to remember. It's a breezy read (only took me a weekend) and Ignatius writing style (apart from his ridiculous romantic segments) is engrossing and almost effortless. It truly draws you in to each page, there is no denying that, but the end result is less than what one would expect.

Not all editions are created equal.

If you are new to Lang, it started in 1889 with the blue fairy book, and then a series developed, yellow, crimson, orange, red, and so forth.

The fact that this series has endured to now is a testament to its quality.

As you read, you will discover fairy tales and myths from all over the world, including the well known writers such as Grimm, Andersen, Perrault, and Mme D'Aulnoy.

These are not the politically correct stories you might expect, and I believe you will find them useful whether it's for your own reading pleasure, of for passing on stories to children.

In fact, if you look beyond the surface of the story, there is a cautionary aspect for children who might get lost, and the evil characters they might meet like the wolf in sheep's clothing, or the boy who cried wolf, or the nice person who offers a gift, but is really a wicked queen in disguise.

There may be a young prince who helps a hairy man escape, and the king embarrassed and enraged orders the child to be killed. Naturally the woodsman slaughters an animal instead, and returns those to the king instead as evidence of performance of the deed.

There are stories of boys becoming men, being tested by the princess, and doing great deeds to prove their worth. Some characters are wicked and evil, and so the protagonist has to develop resources of their own to defeat the deceit, trickery, jealousy, ambition, and wickedness of the people they encounter.

I recommend you start with the blue book, because it has most of the best known stories, for example, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots. You can check the contents of each book at mythfolklore, and even read the stories online.

If you are buying Lang, you need to know which publisher, because there are many editions through different publishers, some are good with nice print and pictures, others have small print and no pictures.

I highly recommend the Dover edition which has pictures and good size print. These pictures are black and white drawings. The Boomer books edition has good size print. If you want a durable hardcover library style book with a red string bookmark, I recommend the D N Goodchild books. Avoid the compilation book, and buy them individually.

One of my favorite stories not in this edition is The wooing of Olwen. It's unusually cruel and bloodthirsty from Wales and King Arthur's court.

Thirty-seven marvellous unadulterated fairy-tales

Andrew Lang's series of fairy-tale books are some of the fundamental children's reading of the twentieth and late nineteenth century. The stories are not "original": there's no such thing when they were almost without exception passed down orally; but they are in old, not very modernized tellings.
Many readers who have only seen or read modern, Disney-fied versions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or Snow-White will not recognize some of the darker twists in these tales. For example, in Sleeping Beauty, when the Prince wakes the Princess and marries her, the story is by no means over. The Prince's mother is an Ogress, whom his father married for her wealth, and it's suspected that she likes to eat little children; that "whenever she saw little children passing by, she had all the difficulty in the world to avoid falling upon them". The happy couple have two children, named Day and Morning, and the Ogress decides to dine on them one day when the Prince is away. Yes, it still has a happy ending, but Disney it isn't.
The illustrations--8 full page, plus 130 smaller ones--are all from the original 1891 edition. They're black and white woodcuts; very atmospheric, and I think most children will like them.
The only thing that might have to be explained to a child is the occasional use of vocabulary that is no longer current. Most often this is the use of "thee" and "thou"; but a few other words will crop up. However, they're usually inferable from context, and the stories are marvellous entertainment regardless.

Spiffy Collection!

"The Blue Fairy Book" is amazing. I am planning to collect all of Andrew Lang's color fairy tale books. It has an excellent group of stories from different fairy tale writers, including Perrault, d'Aulnoy, and Grimm. This book was originally printed in the 19th century. It has not been abridged, nor have any of the original pictures been taken out. (Be warned, they're *artistic*) These are the original, unaltered by Disney versions, and contain the nightmarish plots they were meant to have. Anyone who collects fairy tales should have this.

Lives of the Naughty Readers

Velvet does it again with another installment of The Black Door series. We meet four new women who come together for a book club. Each woman leads a different life, with different drama, and even different sexual preferences.

Naomi has the hots for her hubby. However since she gave birth to their son, their sex life is nonexistent. Her husband simply lost an attraction. Will he ever get it back? Kennedy meets Nigel in the sky, literally. She is a flight attendant and falls in love with a mysterious frequent flyer. But is Nigel who he really claims to be? Tyler just ended a relationship and needs a break from women. However an unsuspecting twist comes along and stirs up the love lives of these women.

While the women of the book club were interesting, I was disappointed. Naughty rarely focused on The Black Door. It should have written as a stand-alone novel. If you are looking forward to reading about the other Black Door characters or the adventures that go on beyond the doors of the Black Door, this is NOT the book. If you like Velvet's writing and want a quick read over a weekend, pick it up.

One of the Best Golf Books Ever Written

Where to start? Maybe its Jones' Harvard-educated background combined with his Southern gentleman quality that melds into a style of writing that is unmatched in over 100 years of writings in golf instruction. His conveyance of somewhat technical aspects of the game in an economy of words is astounding, and after reading the book probably 4 times now, I see new instances of incredible use of language with each reading. Here is an example of Jones' use of language - this from the first chapter: "The great fault in the average golfer's conception of his stroke is that he considers the shaft of the club a means of transmitting actual physical force to the ball, whereas it is in reality merely the means of imparting velocity to the clubhead... I like to think of a golf club as a weight attached to my hands by an imponderable medium, to which a string is a close approximation, and I like to feel that I am throwing it at the ball with much the same motion I should use in cracking a whip." Economy of words and language that it so beautiful to read.

Jones' teaching methods are quite unlike most used today. He does not focus on positional teaching; rather, he focuses his efforts on more feel and movement - he conceives the golf swing as a movement. His beliefs include: 1) a totally relaxed grip and setup - this is paramount as any tension destroys the golf swing; 2) use of the lower body (much like Percy Boomer) to start and generate the swing; 3) use of the left hip and foot to start the downswing - Jones calls this the most important move in golf; 4) the golf swing should be conceived as one motion - not an upswing and a downswing; 5) swing the clubhead, as in the Ernest Jones' book of the same name.

Jones still does not get the recognition he deserves. Many consider him one of golf's greatest, but his Grand Slam completed in 1930 still goes down, in most knowledgeable sportswriters, as the greatest accomplishment in the history of sport. Were Jones to play today, there is no question that he would be as dominant a player today, as he was in his era. Computer analysis of his swing showed a hickory-shafted 42 inch driver, travelling at 119 MPH of clubhead speed at impact, faster than 70% of todays' touring pros. Mickelson, Toms, et al have won majors while Tiger was around, yet even the great Walter Hagen never won when Bob Jones played in the same major championship.

Bobby Jones Has Something to Say...

I never saw Bobby Jones stirke a golf ball in person. I never saw him play a full game on 16 mm film for that matter. I can only go by his unmatched amateur record and very short old grainy 16-millimeter film stock of how graceful his swing was...very controlled, impeccable balance/ coordination, unbelievable tempo and rhythm. Pure ballstriking. Pure golf.

In his book, "Bobby Jones on Golf", Jones really gets to the spirit of the game. This is a great book on the nuances, technicalities, and philosophies of the game of golf.

If you read carefully and take his advice seriously, I believe you will become a better player. I can't guarantee this, but there is no reason why a beginner can't shoot in the 80's within the first year to two years of playing. If you do the reading and practice the fundamentals; after 3 years of playing on a regular basis (at least 3 to 4 times a week) you should be shooting in the 70's.

This book is a very easy and compelling read. Moreover, I think you will really enjoy Jone's prose. It's Jone's prose that makes this an enjoyable reading experience. It's by no means flowery or pretentious, but understated and blunt.

Much like reading a Jane Austen novel; it feels like Jones is actually speaking directly to you. And this is the best way to learn about something very complicated; to have the narrator / author personalize his language by using parables, analogies, and personal stories to make it easier for the reader to understand the complicated nuiances and idiosyncracies of the game of golf

Another important note: There are hardly any illustrations and no photographs in this book. There doesn't need to be either because Jones does such a great job in his explantions that his words paint pictures. I was glad that he didn't have to resort to any photos; it would have distracted from his impeccable teachings.

I highly recommend this book whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. Not only will you learn from a golfing master, but you will have a new appreciation for the greatest game on earth.

Along with this book, I also recommend the reading of Ben Hogan's, "Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf", Mickey Wright's "Swing the Wright Way", and Harvey Penick's, "The Little Red Book".
