A swashbuckling, epic tale of love, deceit, bravery, and drama on the high seas, this book is filled with menacing pirates, honorable sea captains, treacherous and greedy men and women, and sea galleons loaded with treasure. Exuberant and engaging action, however wildly improbable.

In BIRDS OF PREY, it is the year 1667, and we are introduced to the 17-year old Englishman, Hal Courteney. Hal is a crewmember on his father's ship, the "Lady Edwina", as it sails the high seas off the southern tip of Africa. England is at war with the Dutch Republic, and the ship's captain, Sir Francis Courteney, has been given license by the British Admiralty to prey on Dutch trading ships of the United East India Company as they return to Amsterdam from the East Indies via the Dutch settlement at the Cape of Good Hope. Sir Francis captures a Dutch ship carrying the newly appointed Governor of Good Hope and his wife, Katinka. During the period when the Governor and his wife are held for ransom, Hal loses his virginity to Katinka, a sadistic, treacherous, highborn slut. (Well, good breeding isn't everything.) Subsequently, Sir Francis, Hal and the rest of the Lady Edwina's company are betrayed by a former ally, the Scottish Earl of Cumbrae, with the help of a former crewmember, Sam Bowles, and imprisoned at Good Hope. Sir Francis is brutally tortured and executed. Hal and a handful of survivors later escape, acquire another ship, and go on to defeat their primary tormentors, Cumbrae and a Dutch army colonel named Schreuder, against the backdrop of a war between the Christian Emperor of Ethiopia and the Moslem Sultan of Oman. Along the way, Hal inherits his father's captaincy and finds true love (as opposed to hormonal-driven sex with Katinka) - twice.

As painted by the author, Wilbur Smith, the chief characters of this swashbuckling adventure are almost caricatures. The "good guys" - principally Hal and his loyal buddies, Aboli, Ned, and Daniel - are brave, noble and heroic. The "bad guys" - Katinka, Governor van de Velde, Bowles, Cumbrae, and Schreuder - are cruel, dishonorable and totally vile. The action, much as in Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones film trilogy, is wildly improbable, especially over the book's latter half. Similarly, however, that same action is scripted with such exuberance and energy that it's totally engaging. Finally, I read to be transported to places that, in most cases, I will never visit. I doubt that I shall ever ply the Indian Ocean or South Atlantic aboard a frigate under sail. This book took me there in grand style.

This is a very light-weight book on African American Art. It breaks no new ground and the information that is provided is substantially less than can be gotten from other publications on African American Art by Samella Lewis, Sharon Patton, Richard Powell, Thomas Riggs, or David Driskell. For the dollars spent and the value received, it is tremendously overpriced.

Five Star Humor

I agree, if you collect older pop culture books, you'll love this. I was about 6 when this thing came out, and maybe 10 when I snuck iinto my brothers' room to rifle through their things and found this. Even then I knew this book was silly. Hard to believe it was written by a doctor! Example, a couple goes to the doc because they cannot get pregnant. He asks what sort of contraception they use. "What are contraceptives?" the couple asks. Boom! Right away the doc has the answer! He realizes the man has been (trying to keep it clean here) "putting it in the wrong place." How did doc come up with THAT conclusion from a seemingly infertile couple by asking only one question? Just because the people don't know what contraceptives are doesn't mean they have never used them anyway! Were people really that stupid back in the 60s? Also, this was before abortion was legal, so the stories about dead women in bathrooms (from what I remember) scared the heck out of me. Now that I'm 43 and know a lot more I might pick up another copy to have even more laughs.

Interesting info... but somewhat prejudiced

Dr. Reuben's book is an update of his classic bestseller, and the reviews mentioning the previous edition make me happy to have grown up in a later generation that speaks about sex more openly.
The author's views have progressed somewhat since the earlier edition, but if you would like an unbiased view of sexuality, this is not the book to buy. For one, there is an anti-gay tone to all of the information on gay sex and culture. I am a 30+ hetero woman and I cringed at some of what was written here. I don't think authors should cater to a politically correct audience, but I was surprised that this came from a medical doctor with a specialty in psychiatry! At another point in the book, he talks about the IUD method of birth control almost as if it is responsible for sexually transmitted diseases. As far as I know, many women successfully use this as their birth control method...seems strange?! All in all, a fun read if you are interested in popular culture. But --especially for young readers-- there are much better books on the subject.

Hard to Beat

I'm a big Lee Child fan. As far as I'm concerned, the tight-lipped, human arsenal Jack Reacher is the most compelling figure in contemporary escapist thriller fiction. So when I tell you that "The Hard Way" is the best novel of its kind to hit the shelves in the last few years, I'll admit I'm biased.

This is the tenth in the Reacher series, and it may be the best. In "Hard Way", trouble finds Reacher innocently enough, sitting in a New York sidewalk caf� sipping an espresso. Events unwind, and soon our hero is locked-and-loaded in solving a kidnapping, thick as thieves with a team of mercenary thugs, contemporary soldiers of fortune with shady backgrounds led by former Special Forces colonel Edward Lane. Lee Child is at his best when spinning a good mystery for Reacher to solve, and nagging incongruities surrounding the kidnapping of Lane's wife and daughter provide the perfect backdrop for Child to practice his craft. "The Hard Way's" Reacher is a bit wiser, more mature, using more brain and less brawn. More Sherlock Holmes and less Rambo this time around. In fact, more than 300 pages have turned before Reacher actually hurts someone, but the Child layers the tension and drops hints masterfully, leading up to a climax that will have you sweating right through your Barcalounger. The author's patented lean and no-nonsense prose is in top form, but what makes Child so readable are the obscure little bits of knowledge and factoids tucked away in cracks and corners of the plot, adding enough depth and authenticity to give the larger-than-life Reacher credibility that sets him apart from the just plain silly superheroes of so many "thrillers" of the day.

So to wrap it up, "The Hard Way" is about as good as it gets - intelligent, clever, a .50 caliber pressure tank tale that twists and turns and jumps from Greenwich Village to Africa's west coast - of bad guys doing bad things and paying the price to an avenging angel in the form Jack Reacher. One word of warning: don't start reading this unless you've got some free hours ahead, for once started, "The Hard Way" is likely to trash plans for the weekend or keep you up way past bedtime. But the again, I'm biased.

I have a dirty little secret: Every time a new Lee Child book comes out, I secretly hope it will be lousy. Most series that have lasted for ten or more books have a few clunkers in them. When I read those clunkers, I think to myself, "A-ha! I knew they were only human!" and spend a good week or two feeling smug and superior.

But so far, the only feeling the Reacher books have stirred in my cold heart is envy.

THE HARD WAY is no exception.

Once again, Child drops his loner hero into the middle of a very bad situation, and once again Reacher uses a combination of wits and violence to unravel an ever-twisting plot.

THE HARD WAY contains more than its fair share of action, suspense, surprises, and sex. It also contains some damn fine writing. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, and hated for it to end.

If you're a reader, you'll love it.

If you're a writer, it won't make you feel good about your own work. Not even a tiny bit.

Skilfully Written

As I am a `Virgin' as far as Lee Child's books are concerned, I was quite surprised to read on the fly leaf that the author is not American, particularly as the content of the book is pure American thriller. This type of book is not really my cup of tea and would certainly not have been the first book I would have picked off the shelf, but I get books sent to me both from publisher's author's and also my family use every occasion to buy me books as presents and this is where this one came from.

I have since learned that as far as thriller authors are concerned Lee Child is flavour of the month, so it was with some interest that I sat down to read the book. The book is well structured. It has a beginning a middle and an end (you would be surprised how many books don't). Well written by an author who has researched his subject thoroughly and in Jack Reacher the leading character in the book he has portrayed an endearing modern day hero, who grows on the reader as the book progresses. For anyone who loves thrillers particularly American based thrillers. This would be manna from heaven. For those who love the authors writing, I am preaching to the converted. For those who have not read his books, they are well worth reading. Try this one and perhaps then you will want to read his other books too.

However, their harmony is destroyed when Jeremy's Ohio cousin, Caroline Kemble, arrives in town. Upon disembarking, Caroline introduces her cousin and his two friends to former President Monroe, who sailed on the same ship. Soon Jeremy's two buddies compete for Caroline's regard. Undecided between the two obviously different suitors, Caroline heeds the advice of George's wily grandfather, Hugh Stapleton, who convinces her that she could be a major force if she marries George, who has a major political future ahead of him. Caroline also has an affair with John, which leads to a child.
While George and Caroline marry, Jeremy pays John to leave town. In 1832, George becomes the senator from New Jersey with Caroline being the true power behind the scenes. John has become a major player in southern politics. Over the next several decades, their paths will cross as slavery takes center stage throughout the nation.
Renowned historian Thomas Fleming scribes a fascinating novel centering on the decades between the end of the Monroe presidency to the Civil War. Jackson to Lincoln

A nation struggles to reconcile its desires to be both good and powerful. A woman drifts between two men, one basically good, one basically after power. I preferred Flemming's account, of a few fictional characters roles World War I in his novel "Over There", to this book. I know others have found his work to be somewhat less complelling than what they are accustomed to, but I enjoy the story he weaves around historical events and characers. Based on the two books I have read, having an interest in history seems to be a prerequisite to enjoy Flemming's work. If you struggle to identify the key issues of the presidency of Van Buren, Tyler or Polk, this book will be informative. The characters are a bit insular, and their development takes a back seat to history at times. However, I appreciate Flemming's work and find it to be a good blend of the issues of the past and the character flaws in people.
