There is the strange hostility of Mr. Jenkins, one of the richest men in town. Hinton guides us through this landscape of absorbing characters with good humor and a gift for mixing the mystical with the everyday. Dialogues take place amid simple activities brought so cinematically to life that the visual images fairly jump out. Hinton even escapes triteness in her description of Tessa's first love, a relationship that pulls everyone's secrets together and out into the open. The prose is fresh, the characters absorbing, and Hinton achieves the resolution of the novel's mysteries through a satisfying blend of love, death, grace and redemption.

Her book as light as a whisper and sweet as southern iced tea, the author has a deft touch with dialect and a deep understanding of the psyche of the women she writes about. Not as good as she's capable of.

I read another book by this author, Friendship Cake, which I really enjoyed and passed around to several friends. So I picked this one up thinking it would be worth a read. Luckily, it only took me about an hour and a half to read it, since that's about as long as I'll remember it.

I guess I never really cared about the characters too much. It's not a thick enough book that there's a lot of room for exploring and exposing the characters, which is too bad, because they could be interesting. And I know Hinton's capable of it from her last book. I also read that the author thinks race relations is so important to this story ... I never got the whole emphasis on race relations thing. The story happens to characters who happen to be interracial friends/lovers, but I never get that it's important to the plot.

Not to mention that the "big secret" is telegraphed so blatantly it's hard not to know what it is almost immediately.

In spite of its faults, I think it would be OK for a quick beach read or if you just don't care for much depth at the moment.

Lovely story of kinship and love in the South...

Author Lynne Hinton has an elegant way with words, and she quietly delights us with this follow up to Friendship Cake.
Told from the standpoint of Tessa, a deceptively simple young woman of 18, the story of the Ivy women, their secrets, loves and heartaches, resonates in the beautiful North Carolina setting. The Ivy women have "the Knowing"..that psychic phenomena that seems to drift in and out of families of southern women. It is that gift, so seldom used by Tessa, that ferrets out an old family secret that will change the lives of the family forever.
Hinton's writing is soothing, and she constructs sentences in a poetic way. A passage about Tessa's Grandaddy:
"He was the moon to us when we were small, big and soothing and full. We didn't hear the stories of his drinking or his heavy hand until the ground over his casket was grassy and flat. Grandma saw no need to spoil our ideas of a good man."
A small book, words are used sparingly and precisely to help the reader get to know the characters, and to read this chapter in their lives with them. A quiet talent is Lynne Hinton...

Nice story, quick read

This is the first book I have read by Hinton. While I don't consider it a keeper - in fact most likely I shall give it away - it was a nice, quick read. Great for the summertime/beach type story.
The setting is North Carolina and the generational story is the kind that I like. I do believe it bogs down a little and I was able to tell where it was going before it ended. Otherwise I would have added the fifth star.
Hinton writes in a style that I enjoy. Though the voices of each character seemed realistic, I felt she did use some sterotypical descriptions/actions. I would read more of her books in the future.

About the Author

Jan Karon, born Janice Meredith Wilson in the foothills of North Carolina, was named after the title of a popular novel, Janice Meredith.

Jan wrote her first novel at the age of ten. "The manuscript was written on Blue Horse notebook paper, and was, for good reason, kept hidden from my sister. When she found it, she discovered the one curse word I had, with pounding heart, included in someone's speech. For Pete's sake, hadn't Rhett Butler used that very same word and gotten away with it? After my grandmother's exceedingly focused reproof, I've written books without cussin' ever since."

Several years ago, Karon left a successful career in advertising to move to the mountain village of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and write books. "I stepped out on faith to follow my lifelong dream of being an author," she says. "I made real sacrifices and took big risks. But living, it seems to me, is largely about risk."

Enthusiastic booksellers across the country have introduced readers of all ages to Karon's heartwarming books. At Home in Mitford, Karon's first book in the Mitford series, was nominated for an ABBY by the American Booksellers Association in 1996 and again in 1997. Bookstore owner, Shirley Sprinkle, says, "The Mitford Books have been our all-time fiction bestsellers since we went in business twenty-five years ago. It's OK. Not a Mitford book, though.

I love Jan Karon's writing. She is truly balm for the soul.I expected a Father Tim novel, and instead I got this copy and paste job. It's my mistake, since I was in a Father Tim buying frenzy and just clicked on everything I could find.

Seven Year in Tibet - Top Notch.

The story of a dramatic escape by Heinrich Harrer and his climbing associate Peter Aufschnaiter from and Indian internment camp after their arrest by the British when they were attempting to climb Nanga Parbat, at the outbreak of World War II. The book details their journey across Tibet including their near demise with the Khampas, before reaching Lhasa and in my view, discovering a way of looking at life very different to our own. The book then goes on to cover Heinrich Harrer's relationship with the Young Dalai Lama and the Dalai Lama's enthusiasm to learn more about the world he lived in. The book also provides an insight into life in Lhasa before the coming of the Chinese. Finishing with the onset of the Chinese occupation and the flight of the Dalai Lama, I found this to be a very well written book and it can be seen throughout the book how the very personality of the author changes from how I would describe as something not to far short of arrogance at the beginning to someone who cared very much about a people who just wanted to be able to get on with a way of live that had lasted for centuries and which to a great degree they were content with, but due to circumstances beyond their control, they were unable to do. I read this book after visiting Tibet myself in 1998 and the contrast between the Tibet described in the book and that which I saw was a sharp one. Heinrich Harrer himself returned to Tibet in 1982 and observed the changes himself (detailed in 'Return to Tibet', more of a thesis than a story, but nevertheless essential reading after 'Seven Years in Tibet'), noting the loss of much he had held dear when he was there in the 1940's. If you Heinrich Harrer's true story of Tibet, read the book - the film adaptation does not fit the storyline of the book and Heinrich Harrer himself is portrayed in a much poorer light early in the film than the book, which I feel is not fair. Another glaring error is that the film shows Heinrich Harrer in Lhasa after the Chinese arrive - Heinrich Harrer and the inaugerated Dalai Lama had already left Lhasa before the Chinese arrival.

A Worthy Read

The movie is powerful, but I certainly also recommend the book. Seven Years in Tibet tells the story of Harrer's escape from British imprisonment, and his exile in Tibet. Written in very plain and accessible English, it nonetheless conveys the powerful impressions - the danger, the cold, and the exotic experience of a new and foreign culture. Readers will undoubtedly be moved and impressed with his account of the Tibetan people. There is, unfortunately, relatively little of the book dedicated to his immediate tutoring experience of the Dalai Lama (only one chapter - but it is a valuable one). Much of the book discusses his escape and the trials and tribulations he and his mountaineering companion faced en-route to Lhasa. In spite of that shortcoming, the book remains a vital perspective on the Tibetan culture as it existed prior to the Chinese takeover in 1950. Anyone concerned about the Tibetans should read this book by a very trusted friend of the Dalai Lama.
