This is very poor quality for a hardcover.

We know the text is gold, what I review is the quality of this volume which cost $20 at the time of this writing. The size is good for holding in your hands at night. The paper and binding are cheap and of dubious permanency; the worst feature being the pages which are distractingly transparent so as to obscure the words when not flush with the page behind, and even then the text of the next page can be seen.

This is very poor quality for a hardcover.

The Brothers Karamazov is one of the greatest novels ever written. Creating unique, believable characters, Dostoevsky explores three major world views: Ivan, the intellectual atheist; Dimetri, the sensualist, and Alyosha, the Christian believer. Yet, each of these "types" exhibit moments of the other world views. The author portrays these world views in the matrix of Mother Russia. A murder mystery is the framework for revealing and solidifying the natures of each of these characters, but there are many other unforgettable characters in the Russia of the latter 19th century, as depicted here. Who could have birthed "the Grand Inquisitor" argument better, as the atheist's credo? A marvelous, devastating exposure of human nature!

Dostoevsky is a master of character, and interested in political and religious theory, so this book reads more like a text than a murder story. It has the structure of a psychological mystery, including a murder and a dramatic trial. One feels like they are living in Russia of the late 1800s, and that you are friends with the Karamazov family. Keeping track of the various names, nicknames, and characters can be challenging.

Everest to satisfy the spirit of his bloodlines

Totally enthralling book that describes the life of Sherpas as the real climbers of the Himalayas on whose backs the Europeans made their attempts at various summits. It describes Tenzing as a humble man with an ambition to climb Mt. Everest to satisfy the spirit of his bloodlines. He will be your hero by the end of the book, a mountain peasant who conquered the hearts of many people around the world. You will also see remnants of the racial, ethnic, and class bias as it was part of 20th century culture.

Travel classic!!

I treasure my broken and browned paperback edition of this travel classic!!! Tenzing Norgay Sherpa (where did Amazon come up with 'Norkey'??) was the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest, along with Sir Edmond Hillary, and they famously refused to ever say who reached the summit first, instead insisting that it was a collaborative effort which could not have succeeded without each partner's efforts. This autobiography, written with James Ramsey Ullman, reads authentically as Tenzing's voice. First published in 1955, two years after the summit victory of 1953, this is rightly a classic of adventure writing, as well as a good view of Sherpa society.

Dig this one out from a second hand shop....

A genuinely inspiring book, and a totally inspiring man. It's a great autobiography, full of stories of incredible hardship overcome by a love of the mountains and personal drive far beyond most of his contemporaries. It leaves you in no doubt that he was one of the great climbers, repeatedly going back up to try and rescue people when others lacked the strength. But he always had the right instincts for a turnaround, even when he and Raymond Lambert could probably have made the first ascent of Everest. It's also quite clear that he loved Lambert and would have died trying to rescue him if it had come to that. This is not a man who steps over a climber in trouble.

Although told to Ullman in a mix of English and Nepali, you really get a sense of Tenzing's voice throughout. I laughed out loud a couple of times at his dry wit. This sentence on the final walk-in sums up both the man and the style for me: 'As I thought of Everest and the great days ahead of us the complaints of my companions sounded like the cackling of so many hens'.

I found a battered 1955 reprint some time ago and am very happy I did. A real shame that this is out of print.

There is a passage early in Augusten Burroughs's harrowing and highly entertaining memoir, Running with Scissors, that speaks volumes about the author. While going to the garbage dump with his father, young Augusten spots a chipped, glass-top coffee table that he longs to bring home. "I knew I could hide the chip by fanning a display of magazines on the surface, like in a doctor's office," he writes, "And it certainly wouldn't be dirty after I polished it with Windex for three hours." There were certainly numerous chips in the childhood Burroughs describes: an alcoholic father, an unstable mother who gives him up for adoption to her therapist, and an adolescence spent as part of the therapist's eccentric extended family, gobbling prescription meds and fooling around with both an old electroshock machine and a pedophile who lives in a shed out back. But just as he dreamed of doing with that old table, Burroughs employs a vigorous program of decoration and fervent polishing to a life that many would have simply thrown in a landfill. Despite her abandonment, he never gives up on his increasingly unbalanced mother. And rather than despair about his lot, he glamorizes it: planning a "beauty empire" and performing an a capella version of "You Light Up My Life" at a local mental ward. Burroughs's perspective achieves a crucial balance for a memoir: emotional but not self-involved, observant but not clinical, funny but not deliberately comic. "Bookman gave me attention. We would go for long walks and talk about all sorts of things. Like how awful the nuns were in his Catholic school when he was a kid and how you have to roll your lips over your teeth when you give a blowjob," writes Burroughs (Sellevision) about his affair, at age 13, with the 33-year-old son of his mother's psychiatrist. That his mother sent him to live with her shrink (who felt that the affair was good therapy for Burroughs) shows that this is not just another 1980s coming-of-age story. The son of a poet with a "wild mental imbalance" and a professor with a "pitch-black dark side," Burroughs is sent to live with Dr. Finch when his parents separate and his mother comes out as a lesbian. While life in the Finch household is often overwhelming (the doctor talks about masturbating to photos of Golda Meir while his wife rages about his adulterous behavior), Burroughs learns "your life [is] your own and no adult should be allowed to shape it for you." There are wonderful moments of paradoxical humor Burroughs, who accepts his homosexuality as a teen, rejects the squeaky-clean pop icon Anita Bryant because she was "tacky and classless" as well as some horrifying moments, as when one of Finch's daughters has a semi-breakdown and thinks that her cat has come back from the dead. Beautifully written with a finely tuned sense of style and wit the occasional clich‚ ("Life would be fabric-softener, tuna-salad-on-white, PTA-meeting normal") stands out anomalously this memoir of a nightmarish youth is both compulsively entertaining and tremendously provocative.

This memoir by Burroughs is certainly unique; among other adventures, he recounts how his mother's psychiatrist took her to a motel for therapy, while at home the kids chopped a hole in the roof to make the kitchen brighter. Not all craziness, though, this account reveals the feelings of sadness and dislocation this unusual upbringing brought upon Burroughs and his friends. His early family life was characterized by his parents' break-and-destroy fights, and after his parents separated, his mother practically abandoned Burroughs in hopes of achieving fame as a poet. At 12, he went to live with the family (and a few patients) of his mother's psychiatrist. At the doctor's home, children did as they wished: they skipped school, ate whatever they wanted, engaged in whatever sexual adventures came along, and trashed the house and everything in it, while the mother watched TV and occasionally dusted. Burroughs has written an entertaining yet horrifying account that isn't for the squeamish: the scatological content and explicit homosexual episodes may limit its appeal. Disturbingly honest--and disturbingly funny

When he was a teenager in Massachusetts during the 1970s, Augusten Burroughs kept daily journals recording everything that happened to him. "Running with Scissors" is a result of those journals, but it's unlikely that anyone who suffered experiences like his would need a journal to recall them. Instead, his diaries both gave him the therapeutic outlet he needed while growing up and supplied this book with the rich detail that makes it, at times, so unbelievable.

Burrough's mother was a struggling poet who wanted to be like Anne Sexton, and, lacking any talent, she instead suffered Sexton's psychotic episodes. The father, unable to deal with his wife's instability, drank himself out of the relationship. Eventually, Burroughs is abandoned by his family and adopted by his mother's psychiatrist, a certifiable lunatic who dispenses drugs and sex far more diligently than sound advice and who believes discipline is an evil to be avoided at all costs. To complicate an already disastrous situation, other members of this adopted family include several deeply disturbed individuals, including a pedophile who finds a ready victim in the 14-year-old Burroughs.

I read this book two months ago, and, while I found it simultaneously appalling and enjoyable, I didn't know what to make of it. Since then, I've read several press reports that address some of the rumors generated by this book's publication. No, none of the people described in this book have sued (or threatened to sue) the author for libel. True, no child with the name "Augusten Burroughs" ever lived anywhere near Northampton--because Burroughs legally changed his name when he was 18. In sum, I've read nothing to indicate that Burroughs is making it all up.

Yet there are two criticisms of the book I don't understand. Unfortunately for Burroughs, the back cover includes a single blurb comparing him to David Sedaris, and many readers, unable to think for themselves, contrast the two authors and find Burroughs lacking. Other than being gay and funny (and it's insulting that that is all it takes for people to link the two authors), Burroughs and Sedaris have nothing in common--each has his own writing style and a unique sense of humor. It would be just as pertinent to compare him to Ru Paul.

The second criticism is that Burroughs reproduces conversations verbatim from thirty years ago. Putting aside the fact that he was able to consult diaries to refresh his memory, this technique is not uncommon. J. R. Ackerley, Annie Dillard, and Philip Roth--to name just three I've read recently--all use the same conceit in their classic memoirs. Burroughs is not as good as these three writers--his prose is a bit austere, and the book teeters on the edge of John Waters-inspired camp. Nevertheless, criticism of "recreated" dialogue seems gratuitous: any detail in any autobiography can be censured on the same grounds. Burroughs quite successfully recreates for the reader certain episodes of his life--episodes no human being would have been able to forget--and the exact wording of recalled dialogue matters as much as the exact color of the polyester shirt he was wearing at the time.

Regardless of its faults (both real and alleged), the book is vivid proof that Burroughs emerged from his past with a profound sense of dignity. In a recent interview, he said of the older man who sexually abused him: "Mostly I still feel an incredible rage that he would do that to a young person, but just as much as I feel that rage I feel sorry for him, because he was someone who was mentally ill and had the most atrocious therapist possible." This quote alone displays his uncanny ability to step back and reflect detachedly on his experiences and to be both empathetic and sympathetic even towards those who deserve his venom. Some readers will be disturbed by Burroughs's ability to laugh (and make us laugh) at what happened to him. Yet the book probably would have unbearable otherwise--and, if it weren't for his sense of humor, it's unlikely the author would be around to tell us his story at all.

Could anyone's life BE any stranger!!!

I saw the cover and chuckled, thinking, aw, this will be a cute story. My God, how wrong was I? Augusten Burroughs writes a memoir of his young years growing up in not only one, but two totally disfunctional households. His parents despise each other and you begin to wonder on which page one might kill the other.
Mom is totally dependent on her psychiatrist, spending endless hours with him. He is portrayed as a Santa Claus-type person...
a right jolly old elf. When Augusten is left to stay with psychiatrist and family, we are plunged into a household that goes WAY beyond bizarre! You really have to read it to believe it. I honestly looked at his picture on the back cover at least
20 times while reading the book wondering how this guy could look so normal after what he had been through!
This is one mind-blowing read. I was so intrigued by his story that I went on NPR's web-site to listen to his interviews.
Gosh, he sounds so grounded...and yet how could it be?

Disturbingly hilarious

I found myself laughing hysterically at this book while simultaneously shaking my head in horror. It's the story of Burrough's life from the age of roughly 13 to 16. Burrough's lived a middle-classed life, but the people around him were gradually losing it. His mother began to have "psychotic breaks" (although it sounds like she may have had bipolar disorder) and hooked up with a bizarre psychiatrist - Dr. Finch. Soon, every aspect of their lives are touched by Dr. Finch and his equally bizarre family. At times, the events are horrifying, such as Burrough's molestation by Dr. Finch's adopted son. Remarkably, Burrough's manages to find the humor even in these situations. People are likely to compare Burrough's to another gay humorist, David Sedaris; however, Burrough's stories are far darker than those of Sedaris, although both of them write great funny stories. This book was a tremendously quick read, and I laughed out loud more than any recent book I've read. Highly recommended on that basis, but some readers are likely to be highly offended by some of the content.

Very poor formatting, poor searching

I have many paper book anthologies of poetry and hoped this would allow me to carry one. However, the formatting and font is more primitive than the worst of Gutenberg, and it is impossible to search past the name of the poet. I'd pay ten times as much for the simple organization built into ordinary Kindle magazine editions, such as Atlantic or Nation. I'll delete this one, and make sure I download a sample of everything I buy henceforth.

Wide-ranging basics

This contains most of the classic poems known and loved over the years. The "children's section" contains little poems I hadn't read since I was a child and I enjoyed visiting them again.

It's fairly easy to search for a particular poem if you know a few essential words contained in it, although some searches might surprise you. I typed in "ancient mariner" and got back 4 references to the original poem, but not the poem itself, as it's included with its archaic spelling. I had better luck when I searched for "albatross".

Really, for this price, wouldn't you like to keep this always on your kindle, just so you can browse through almost any type of poetry you'd like, at any time?

This really is bad!

I must confess, I didn't buy this. I've been stung enough times by rubbish for the Kindle that I never buy anything now without trying it first. First, the good things. This really is an excellent selection of poetry; you would have to be a real Philistine not to find a lot of joy in the content of this anthology. Now, the formatting. I only tried this on Kindle for PC, so it may be worse on the 6" Kindle. If you make the font smaller than the default, still very readable, and adjust the words per line a little, the formatting is fine. Poetry can be a real pig to format! The authors often create lines longer than the average sentence, which can wreak havoc with automatic line-breaks. All in all, I managed to get the formatting to a fairly acceptable standard quite easily. Fonts can be a problem with Kindle; the best solution would be to enable the reader to substitute their own fonts, a bit like with a Web page. In standard publishing a great deal of thought and experienced design goes into typeface selection - usually matching the typeface to the aesthetic of the content. The producers of all the Kindle books I have seen obviously do as little work as possible. Which brings us to organisation. This is where this book is an absolute dog. Essentially, the only thing you can select is the equivalent of a book title. So, you select the poems of Poe, and then plough through them to find the one you want. At least with a printed book, the contents has page numbers!

Perhaps his best book

I've read many of Kurt Vonnegut's novels, and this is perhaps his best one of all (quite a high complement indeed, when considering the man is, in my opinion at least, one of the foremost writers of the 20th century.) Vonnegut's wit is acerbic and as on-target as ever; this time he expells on us about the meaning of life... or the meaninglessness of it. While this is perhaps not his most profound and meaningful novel (which would probably be Cat's Cradle), and not his most purposeful one (undoubtedly Slaughterhouse-Five), it is perhaps his wittiest and one of his funniest, and works the best as satire. It is astonishingly well-written. Quite a bit leap over his already very good first book, Player Piano. This has more of a plot than later novels would, without using much of the non-linear storytelling format that Vonnegut would later make famous use of.
At this point, I also feel the need to comment on the review titled "whence..." The reviewer is taking the details of this book too seriously. The point of this book is not the plot or the details; it is the principle, the style. The reviewer goes to pains to point out scientific inaccuracies and plot holes in the book (yes, the escape maneuver from Mercury is implausible; yes, things happen in the book without any apparent logic or reason; but neither of these matter in the larger context of the book.) This book is not meant to be hard science fiction; nor should it be compared to scientifically stringent fiction by writers such as Arthur C. Clarke (whom the reviewer referenced.) In fact, I would say that this book is not science fiction at all. It is satire, pure and simple. The scientific ideas and elements in the plot are not meant to be taken seriously (as is often the case with actual hard science fiction; for example, the aformentioned Clarke's "The Fountains of Paradise", in which he propagates his vision for a space elevator.) Vonnegut uses these only as means to an end. This is seriously-intended satire (albeit highly enjoyable to read) put into a science fiction framework. This is actually, I would argue, what makes the book great.
The genius of Vonnegut is that he takes highly serious subjects and puts them into a context in his books that puts them in a universal light where they can be examined: through satire, he places deathly serious subjects in improbable situations where we can all laugh at them, be entertained by them, but also examine their reality in depth. All books by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. work on two levels. The first is the "skin deep" level, on which the books appear to be merely rough-and-tumble, hilarious, little entertaining adventures. However, there is also the deeper element that is always there, the hard themes that resonate beneath the surface. Many writers treat such things entirely seriously, which is fine, but Vonnegut's style puts it in a format that everyone can relate to. This is why he is such a great and important writer, and why so many of us relate to him and have learned so much from him. Perhaps our most acute AND entertaining social critic, Kurt Vonnegut is an author that we are lucky to have, and this is one of the brightest shining gems in his canon.

Great book, mistake-ridden kindle edition

I think this book is a work of genius. I'm not going to say much about it because mostly everything has already been said (better!) in other reviews.

HOWEVER - the kindle edition is full of horrendous spelling, punctuation and formatting mistakes. It is close to unbearable and made me quite angry. I don't see why an e-book is any less worthy of an editor/proofreader than a physical book, especially if you're paying good money for it.

Underrated is an understatement for Sirens...

When people hear the name Kurt Vonnegut, they think of Slaughterhouse 5, or Cat's Cradle, or perhaps even that his books are often burned in high schools around the country for their dim look at human existence. Not to, in any way, down play the importance or greatness of his more famous works, as I love them all, but I must say that Sirens of Titan is superior to his other works. For some reason, perhaps the science fiction aspects of the novel, this book has not received its deserved recognition. I read approximately the first fifty pages thinking that this book would be about the same as his other novels. I almost put it away to start a different one. Thankfully, I pressed on. Literally, a few pages later, I was entranced by the language, the structure, the revealed surprises, and the humanity of The Sirens of Titan. Every time you think he has revealed the best secret of the book, another one reveals itself. This story is wonderfully intertwined between a set of characters, and the meaning of life. I have since read this book three more times, enjoying it more each time through. If you only read another book in your entire life, please let it be this one. Open your heart and your mind, and let Vonnegut pour into them his wisdom and hope for a better tomorrow.
