A good collection
By Laura Alethea
To me, Booth Tarkington is pretty close to the top of my list of must-have American authors. I first encountered him many years ago, in a volume containing the trilogy comprised of Penrod, Penrod and Sam, and Penrod Jashbur. My main disappointment is that the third volume, Penrod Jashbur, was not included in this collection. But I can understand that the editors bowed to the climate of the times. Tarkington, genius as he was, had a great flaw, and that was his racial attitudes. I suspect today's culturally sensitive critics would object to just about every single story in that third volume, which is ridiculous. Adults should be able to take the bad and the good, and write off the bad, in the context of the times. You would think so. But, that's not the case it seems. The target audience of the Penrod was not children, but adults.
With objectivity, we can generally look at the issue that he was a product of his times; and in the interest of academic freedom, oppose the abridging of authors. However, in this case, I do feel there are a couple of paragraphs in the missing volume that are so offensive that I wish they could be blacked out. Maybe they didn't want to abridge. And anyone with sense can tell that the scene about the "circus" Penrod got up, -- it was not personal at the little black youngster, especially when compared with what happened to the little white boy! But I suppose some would try to make something out of that, and the consequences of his "circus" is the most memorable part of the third volume, at least to me.
So, if your main interest in getting this is to have all three volumes of Penrod, this collection would not be your choice. But if you don't read anything else he ever wrote, you're missing a LOT. Alice Adams is always one of my favorites. Overall, it's a good collection.
But for Penrod, I hold on to my old printed copy of Penrod: His Complete Story, and get it out and read it every so many years -- and I laugh. I laugh til my sides hurt and the tears are streaming down my face. It can make me laugh when nothing else can. Because Tarkington captured forever in the character of "the immortal Penrod," the soul of the twelve-year-old boy, as no one has done since, nor ever shall. Don't miss it.

Tarkington I never knew
By Clayton Freeark
I read Tarkington's "Penrod" series multiple times as a youngster, but I never knew until I bought this book how much more he had written. I am amazed at the timeliness of what he says in the era he wrote (WWI) and how much of it applies to our present time, how the more things change, the more they remain the same. He even describes a white sidewall haircut on a rebellious young man in a story written just prior to WWI. He is an excellent author and I recommend him highly.

Essential ?
By Meredith Morrow
This collection contains the most important novels Booth Tarkington wrote: his two Pulitzer Prizes(" Alice Adams" and "The Magnificent Ambersons"): his best seller ("The Conquest of Canaan"); his first big novel ("The Gentleman from Indiana"); and the unforgettable "Penrod". The rest of the 20 works included go from the excellent ("Seventeen", which is classic Tarkington) to the very forgettable ("Monsieur Beaucaire"; "Cherry"; "The Two Van-Revels"--don't read these first!), and includes among the numbered twenty a couple of short stories, which are worth reading, but are not novels ("His Own People";" Beasley's Christmas Party"). That said, the collection gives you an excellent introduction to my favorite American author.
While there are occasional misprints, mostly odd interjections of extra space, the "print quality" is adequate for undistracting , enjoyable reading.
But if I were editing an "Essential" collection of Tarkington, I would have to include "Rumbin Galleries" and "Women". Yes, he did write a very enjoyable novel, some of the chapters of which stand on their own as short stories, which he called " Women". And while this collection includes "The Turmoil", my collection would also have "The Plutocrat" and "The Midlander", which some of Tarkington's contemporaries saw together as a trilogy. And I'd leave out "Harlequin and Columbine" and substitute "Presenting Lily Mars", which is the same story, re-written years later and much improved.
But all this is nit-picking. Tarkington is well worth reading just to get to know his characters, and incredibly fun at times, and essential to understanding American culture from about 1870-1930.
