Full of It?

This healthy sized book was one I meant to read for a long time. I actually read it over a year ago but it has been coming to my mind quite frequently of late because it is about a selfish, boisterous, ostentatious, nice-nasty bully who owns a lot of real estate and is used to having all things his way and as he feels it should be - businessman. He lives high on the hog but has to wallow among them a lot. He has a bit of curiosity regarding the treatment he receives from others while riding high then falling down and scratching his way out of one hole and into another. He uses pretenses well and knows how to keep them up. The novel is what you'd call a sweeping tale and keeps one interested in waiting for the man to get his final comeuppance..
When things catch up to Cap'n Charlie Croker and he is swamped with money and other problems; he makes me think of a dazed baby whose ice cream cone was taken by faithful Rover who wasted no time in devouring the treat right in front of its former owner. And licking his muzzle when done.
I enjoyed The Bonfires of the Vanities so I guess this book was a similar social commentary of the chase for money and power - and the self-serving greed. Doing much dirt but not feeling much for the people who were suffering under his cruel business practices. Somehow Wolfe made the character like-able in his child-like wonder of why some folk just wouldn't fall in line. He thought he was a fine man and only doing what any other man with the same chance would do. He had a strange mix of charisma and cruelty. He was a kindly master to his Black servants (employees) who took to their roles - or pretended to. But it is another type of Black man he has trouble dealing with,
I did enjoy the story and never saw the movie but I imagine the man to have a baby-like quality even when angry and trying to look fierce. Trying to wrest candy - real and unimagined - from the other babies til the bittuh end.
Curious: The eye peeking out from the cutout 'O' in 'Tom' on the cover looks as if it was meant to be Mr. Wolfe's own eye. What's that about?
